The beautiful stylings of Epic Events

What are the words you think of when you are day dreaming about working with your wedding planner? Friendly, understanding, professional, creative, passionate, level headed – those are just a few ways of describing what comes to mind when compiling a check list of things you want to feel about your planner. From building important lists of deadlines and carrying off tasks without a hitch to crafting the perfect moments, Faye Westmorland and her team at Epic Events is all that and more. With over ten years experience in the Calgary wedding, event and hospitality industry, Faye and her expert team build weddings, rehearsals, showers, parties and events that showcase the individual style of each client while simultaneously putting them at east.

For a little summer fun, we got to ask Faye at Epic Events a few questions about trends she loves and what working with the Epic Events team is like!

1. What wedding trends and styles are you loving for this summer?

One of my favorite wedding themes that we are seeing quite a lot of right now is the rustic chic. I just love the natural undertones with soft color accents of dusty rose, and blush pinks which just add such elegance. Of course, we can’t forget the sparkle and bling that will brighten up any event, I especially love that chandeliers are now being more commonly used.

With style, we are seeing brides steer away from the traditional elements of fashion. We are seeing more use of statement jewellery, and more freedom with bridesmaid’s attire. It is great to see just a color palette for the bridesmaids, giving them the freedom to choose a dress that compliments them best, while using one common accent jewellery piece, such as a belt to tie the look together.

Saving the best for last, one of my favorite trends at weddings is the food. We are seeing more unique out of the box ideas, including bite sized food, as well as food that ties in with your theme. From the creative hors d’oeuvres to the family style dinner, you are quite unlikely to leave bored or unsatisfied. We are seeing the most innovative trends taking over with the midnight snacks. Food trucks are trending so much in our city, it only makes sense this would carry over to weddings. We are even seeing a lot of changes from the traditional wedding cake, to brides incorporating cupcakes, cruffs, mini pies, ice cream bars, and even mini bundt cakes.

2. What is your favorite part about working with couples and planning weddings?

I love working with people, and truly enjoy getting to know couples on a personal level to see their passion and love for each other. It is also great to take part in learning about so many different religions, customs, and traditions that are incorporated into weddings.

I just love the constant excitement of wedding planning, there never seems to be a dull moment. My absolute favorite thing however, is the wedding day. Just being able to form a personal bond with our couples, and seeing the pure joy on their face as they take in what we have created for them, it truly is a reward on its own. It is also so amazing to see the love they have for each, and for the couple to be surrounded by so many loving friends and family.

3. Where do you find that couples need the most help and guidance when planning their weddings?

The initial engagement is usually when most brides contact us, as they are so happy but then quickly overwhelmed as they do not know where to get started with their planning. This is our favorite time, as we get to work with a fresh palette and help the couple through the entire planning stage.

We do also get a lot of brides coming to us closer to their wedding dates, as they become stressed out with all of the last minute details. We then become a support system to help the bride be reassured of her decisions, as well as to provide them with resources they may not have access to.

I am often told by my brides they are most thankful to us for the reminders of details they wouldn’t have thought of on their own. More so the things they would never know about if they have not been through this planning process previously, that is where our experience comes into play.

Our Day of Planning service usually tends to be the most popular among our couples, especially for the brides who have been able plan out all the details of their wedding on their own, find this to be the most resourceful service. We want to ensure all their careful planning goes off without a hitch, in which we will take care of everything on their wedding day so the couple, family, and friends can just relax and enjoy the celebration.

4. What can brides do to make the most of their wedding planner?

Keep us up to date and informed. The more information we know the more we can ensure you are taking the right steps, booking the right vendors, and setting realistic timelines. Be sure you are aware of all the services and packages available, and have your planner go through your wedding in detail to ensure all aspects of your wedding are covered. Don’t take on too much, that’s why we are here. If you ever have any questions just ask, as we are always happy to offer advice.

5. What has been the craziest wedding “misadventure” you’ve worked through?

I get asked this during almost every new client consultation. This is a hard one for me, as we have been fortunate not to have any crazy misadventures happen to us. I do also think these ties in with the perks of hiring a planner. We have our backups, contingency plans, and do as much pre planning as possible to avoid this type of situation. Having said that I think all planners can relate, and share a similar story with the flooding that happened last year. It was so amazing to see how everyone pulled together, to show their support and help to accommodate all of the affected weddings as best as possible.
