Rustic Elegant Winter Wedding

Meghan and Josh’s wedding caught my eye on Instagram (that’s right brides, I’m creepy stalking all of you!) and I loved it so much, I sent her a note telling her I had to feature it. Meghan planned her entire day herself, and I love her elegant boho style. Filled with rustic details and love and warmth from family and friends, this winter Alberta wedding is just too good to miss. From the bride:

Josh and I shared an intimate first look around 7am on the day of the wedding, then took photos at sunrise prior to the ceremony. We got married in the Calgary LDS temple, then held our reception in our church’s cultural hall. The theme of our wedding could best be described as “Rustic Elegance”. I really wanted the whole thing to have a kind of whimsical, woodland-y vibe. I DIY-ed almost all of our d cor with the help of my angel mom, who made all of the table centerpieces (simple faux flower arrangements in glass vases that she antiqued herself). My dad and little brothers went out into the woods and cut a bunch of tree stumps that we clustered around the entire reception hall and then placed tons of little candles and flowers on top. We then used thinner cross-sections of the stumps as placemats at our head table. We really wanted to bring the outside inside, as I always dreamed of having an outdoor wedding (which wasn’t really possible to do in January) so we borrowed around 30 undecorated Christmas trees from our family and friends and layered them in with the stumps to give the room a woodland feel. We only had three months after we got engaged to plan the wedding, so we kept things simple and intimate.

I didn’t really have any specific features I was looking for in a gown except for that I wanted it to feel very ethereal and elegant. I ended up going with a simple Watters dress with a floral appliqu bodice, sheer lace sleeves and romantic tulle skirt. I wore a faux flower crown by Gardens of Whimsy to complete the look. I also wore my now-husband’s grandmothers vintage mink stole as my “something old”.

Our wedding featured a romantic colour palette of cream, champagne and burgundy. Our bridesmaids dresses were a huge hit – gorgeous champagne chi chi London gowns that were as unique as the girls themselves.

We served a delicious dessert buffet by An Affair to Remember at our reception and laughed (and cried) the night away listening to speeches and a music program put on by our friends and family. We then ended the evening on the dancefloor.

We picked the song “Alpenglow” by S. Carey as our first dance song. It has this line in it, “I was wondering if you’d be my wife / Be the compass in my rugged life”. I remember first hearing this on a road trip with Josh before we got engaged and just feeling ALL the feels.

The day after the wedding we drove down to Waterton Lakes National Park, where we stayed in a little cabin for a few days. The town was almost completely empty other than the two of us, and it was so fun getting to feel like we were the only people in the

world for our first few days of being married.
