A reoccurring trend we saw at this year’s New York Bridal Fashion Week was the basque or “V-waist” wedding dress. This silhouette is characterized by a curved or V-shape bodice that extends below the natural waistline and ends around the hips. This bodice shape is typically paired with a ball gown or an A-line skirt shape, which helps focus the attention on the waistline and hips. The back of the dress can vary, as some designs mirror the V-shaped front, while others maintain a more traditional straight or curved line. This style is known for elongating the torso, emphasizing the waist, executing the hips and highlighting an hourglass figure.
The basque waist is made of various fabrics. However, it is most commonly constructed with more structured fabrics like satin, mikado silk and certain laces. The options for accessorizing this style are endless; many brides have paired them with gloves and simple beading for a trendy yet classic look.
While this gown shape is currently trending, this timeless silhouette has existed since the 19th century. This style originated in Basque country, a region on the borders of Spain and France, and eventually became popular in the Victorian era. The Basque waist has since remained a staple in bridal fashion and is loved by brides seeking a regal or fairytale-like atmosphere.
