Summer Wedding With Unexpected Rain

After long months of waiting, Crista and Josh finally had their summer wedding which came with unexpected rain. Here in Alberta, August is gorgeous. Very little rain, and hot temperatures. However, their wedding day was the coldest and wettest day of the entire month; a kind of storm with violent wind and heavy rain. People were bundled up in coats and sweaters.

The original idea was to have a dusky sunset ceremony surrounded by nature and soft lighting. Crista loves all kinds of flowers and plants so it was fitting. The couple also loves the clean simplicity of the Tuscan-style wedding decor combined with the family-style dinner setting. However, plans had to change. Thankfully, everyone pitched in to move it indoors. We were lucky enough to have an hour or so, just before the hit of the storm with the couple, so we decided to go to a beautiful park and mix the backgrounds and poses as much as possible. At this point, we knew the weather would probably turn for the worse. The birds and winds were strange, but we haven’t said anything to keep a positive mind and energy.

Our role in this kind of situation is to do everything to make the couple feel good and relaxed. It’s one of the most important days of their lives, and we don’t want to be among those who panic or have doubts. On the contrary, we want to cheer up and remove sad thoughts and disappointment.

Throughout the day, we had to deal with last-minute changes. Fortunately, we were ready for anything. We packed extra lights we put on every corner to create pleasant lighting and we’ve been working on bokeh to bring a bit of magic. We had to think fast and look for a solution in a few seconds.

For the evening party, we also added colour gels as the DJ lights were not showing up on camera most of the time. This allowed us to freeze movement or emotions with something else than a boring white flash.
