From the Creative Team:
When Tomas and Ellen began planning their Banff elopement, they had one dream they couldn’t stop thinking about: seeing the northern lights on their wedding day. They knew it was a long shot.
Although the aurora can occasionally appear in the Canadian Rockies during the summer, August isn’t known for strong displays. They kept their expectations realistic, knowing there was no way to predict whether the skies would cooperate. Behind the scenes, their photographer, Hayley, quietly monitored solar activity and aurora forecasts in the weeks leading up to their elopement, hoping for even the smallest chance. Still, nothing was guaranteed.
Hiking to Their Ceremony Location
Their adventure began at 2:00 PM with the hike up The Onion, a challenging alpine route in Banff National Park. The climb was steep, but every step rewarded them with incredible views of glaciers, rugged peaks, and turquoise alpine lakes.
As golden hour arrived, Tomas and Ellen exchanged their vows surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Canadian Rockies. The sunset painted the mountains in warm light, creating the perfect setting for an intimate ceremony.
At that point, the day already felt complete.

A Surprise No One Expected
After sunset, everyone made their way down to Bow Hut to warm up, have a snack, and rest before hiking back to the parking lot. Then everything changed.
Hayley stepped outside the hut and immediately noticed a faint green glow stretching across the sky. Within minutes, it became clear this wasn’t just a small aurora. It was growing brighter, stronger, and moving quickly across the mountains.
The northern lights had arrived. For an August evening in Banff, it was an incredibly rare sight.

Chasing the Aurora
There wasn’t much discussion. Tomas and Ellen, along with photographers Hayley and Thomas, grabbed their packs, switched on their headlamps, and turned around to hike back up The Onion in complete darkness.
Fueled by excitement and adrenaline, they climbed the mountain once again as the aurora continued to intensify overhead.
Every few minutes the sky transformed. Waves of green swept across the mountains, with hints of purple dancing through the night sky. Standing high above the valley beneath the moving lights felt almost impossible to believe.
It wasn’t part of the timeline. It wasn’t part of the plan. Yet it became the moment none of them will ever forget.

More Than Wedding Photos
The photographs from that night are incredible, but they only tell part of the story.
The real magic was experiencing it together—the quiet mountain air, the sound of boots crunching along the trail in the dark, the excitement of watching the sky come alive, and the feeling of sharing a once-in-a-lifetime moment on their wedding day.
This is what adventure elopements are really about. Not just beautiful views, but unforgettable experiences.

An Adventure That Lasted Until Sunrise
What started as a sunset mountain elopement turned into an all-night adventure.
By the time they reached the trailhead again, it was nearly 5:00 AM, 15 hours after they had started hiking. They were tired, cold, and running on very little sleep, but they also knew they had experienced something incredibly rare.
Some wedding days follow a carefully planned timeline. Others become unforgettable because of what no one could have planned.

Why We Love Adventure Elopements
One of the best parts of planning an adventure elopement is leaving room for the unexpected.
The mountains don’t promise perfect weather, glowing sunsets, or northern lights. But when you’re willing to embrace whatever the day brings, sometimes you’re rewarded with moments that are even better than the ones you imagined.
There are never guarantees in the mountains. But every once in a while, they give you something extraordinary.
