Rachel and Doug are clearly one seriously lucky couple. Planning their destination wedding to Punta Cana in 2016, these two snagged to our Calgary’s most talented wedding professionals to help celebrate their engagement. Phil Crozier of PHOTOPHILCRO took them on a hike to capture their engagement photographs, which featured a custom ring from local Calgary wedding jeweller Ellinor Stenroos of EVStenroos. Here’s what Doug and Rachel had to say about working with these two incredible talents!
Ellinor from EVStenroos was truly a pleasure to work with! She helped me create the perfect custom engagement ring. She provided me with autoCad drawings for multiple options that we had come up with. She was upfront with all pricing and there were no surprises. The ring that was made matched the drawings exactly. She followed up with us after I proposed and resized the ring for a perfect fit! She has an amazing talent and her passion for the craft really shines throughout the process! We can’t wait to design our wedding bands with her!
Phil from Photo Philcro has such an unreal eye for photography. We struggled with choosing a location and Phil’s words were “Don’t worry too much about it, we will make these pics look amazing regardless of where we shoot.” He has a warm and inviting confidence about his talent. Phil made us feel completely comfortable throughout the process. His sense of humor was greatly appreciated. When we received our photos from Phil we were simply shocked and couldn’t believe how stunning they looked. Phil is a rockstar of a photographer and we can’t wait to see the new heights his career takes him to!
We caught up with Ellinor to find out just how precious the process of designing a custom engagement ring can be.

The significance of your desire, action and statement, when asking your partner to be your partner for life, is one that deserves more than a regular shopping experience.
A piece of jewelry that signifies two people joining in a union, or the start of a family… isn’t something you buy off the ‘rack’… it deserves even more than big brand names where great materials and designs are produced in the hundreds.
Through friends and family Doug had seen lots of custom jewellery I have created, so he knew immediately that my quality and design style was what he was looking for. Doug was incredibly easy to work with. He had a general idea of what he was looking for and gave me a ballpark to work around.
As the designer, having freedom to create, yet within guidelines of what the customer is looking for and wanting to achieve, is wonderful.
A lot of times guys get nervous and over-think the process. Sometimes the more research they do, the more confusing it becomes. With 10 years of experience and also working with only the highest standards of metals, processes and diamonds and gemstones, I have the ability to guide the client through what is important and what will create the best end result. And with pieces that are intended to be worn for a life-time, it is important to choose a design that is timeless and will fit the mid-twenty year old, as well as a lady in her 50’s or 60’s. It is also important to keep the addition of a wedding band in mind when creating the engagement ring. Wedding bands that require ‘notches’ in them, or awkward angles that prohibit the wedding band to be worn alone in the future, are often bands that have been created as an after-thought. We design and create pieces that will grow with you, fit your lifestyle, give you years of problem-free wear, and when they do need to be maintained, it’s something we do gladly, because the construction standard and metal integrity is there.
The difference between mass-manufactured jewellery and custom made jewellery isn’t necessarily something you’ll be able to see from photographs or renderings. But when you compare in detail, feel the weight in your hand, and count the days of hassle free wear, you’ll quickly realize why custom jewellery is the most special, wonderful, individual way to celebrate your engagement and relationship
