Fresh Flower Trends from Flower Chix

One of my favourite parts of a wedding is experiencing the beautiful flowers that bring a venue to life. While wedding flowers are a standard decor item, styles and arrangements are as varied as colour palettes themselves. Where’s a bride to start? As much as brides love classic and traditional blooms for their weddings, I think you’d be surprised how much flower trends grow and change, and how much florists put their creativity to test. Lucky for me, I got a chance to ask Tash Recsky, one of the chicks of Flower Chix, all my big wedding flower trend questions. A perfect way to welcome the month of April, here’s Tash’s thoughts on all things fresh and floral!

What’s going to be the most popular wedding flower this year?

This year the rose seems to be making a comeback. The spray, traditional and garden roses all seem to be very popular with couples this year. With so many colours, varieties and sizes available, making roses special to add to any bouquet or arrangement. For a soft and traditional look, we’re seeing a lot of Vendella roses, Jana Spray roses and White O’Hara garden roses. For a darker, edgier look, expect to see Red Paris roses, Rubicon spray roses and Cinnamon Spice garden roses.

What styles of bouquets are brides requesting for this summer?

This wedding season has been full of different styles, but the majority of them are defined by the terms soft, romantic, blush and dreamy. Also, the typical style can be found at a happy medium between a tight, structured bouquet and the loose, garden-y look.

Is there a specific color pallet?

The color palettes are all over the map, but the common color is grey.

  • Grey and pastels
  • Grey and blue
  • Grey and yellow
  • Grey and mint green

What would you consider the most exciting style of centerpiece?

I love the less-is-more look. For example, having multiple vases with minimal flowers, but a wide variety of flowers. Depending on your budget, you could simply have a single rose or orchid in a cylinder, or you could have a whole table runner of vases with flowers.

Are you working on any projects that you are especially excited for?

Yes! We are working with one couple that has a jewel-toned theme for their wedding colors, like rich tones of purple, pink, red and orange. They have asked that each centerpiece be a little different and unique while making sure to stick to the right colour palette. This gives us the opportunity to shop with our wholesalers, order directly from Holland ourselves and find some super flowers. This will create a major wow factor for their guests when they sit down to such a stunning and distinctive centerpiece.

What should brides know about requesting flowers that might not be available or might not be in season?

Try to be open-minded. Understand that flowers have certain growing seasons and that the cost will fluctuate throughout the seasons. Also, remember that flowers are perishable and often come from different parts of the world – there is potential for their flowers to be affected by their environment. However, the bottom line for any couple is to choose a florist you feel gets your vision; you can trust to make the right decisions if substitutions are required and will stick with your colour palette. You wouldn’t want to see red roses if you asked for only white.
